Social unrest was also part and parcel of the 50's and 60's. The civil rights movement sought voting and other rights for African-Americans and quite often led to physical violence. There were lynchings and murders, violent manifestations and assassinations such as that of Martin Luther King Jr. Also the numerous peaceful actions and demonstrations caused uneasiness since they demanded radical alterations to the status quo.
Environmentalism and also the movement for women's rights also triggered some turmoil, although this was hardly ever violent. The advent of the Vietnam War and the army draft that accompanied it triggered unprecedented anti-war activism and opposition.
