The Millennial Generation And Their Present Situation

While named Generation Y and the "echo boomers" much of this population likes to be known as the name that they gave to themselves: the millennial generation. This class is usually defined as those born from about 1980 until the end of the millennium. They come of age in the new 21st century and thereby they take their name. A number of people in the millennial generation also prefer to distinguish themselves evidently from Generation X.

The millennial generation is often called the echo boomers as they are also the product of a baby boom. While there is controversy about precisely how many years to mark as part of this generation, the millennials will calculate somewhere between 76 million and 80 million that makes them the same size as the baby boomers if not slightly larger. Like the baby boomers, a group this huge cannot help but have a major impact on all aspects of life in America.

Although the baby boomers were the result of postwar prosperity and the Cold War and the Space Race, this millennial generation is the product of a more uncertain economy and the era of computers and digital technology. Baby boomers had to adjust to rapidly advancing technologies and use them while this newer demographic was immersed in the computer age basically from birth. They do not really know a world without cell phones and computers and the internet.

The millennial or Y generation is more likely to come from a family having a working mom and to come from a divorced family. Rapidly developing technologies also mean that many jobs become obsolete and continual education and retraining is absolutely important. While their parents and grandparents usually wanted to keep a job for years if not their entire career, this is not the case.

Not only is the millennial generation more likely to change jobs frequently in their working lives, they tend to change the whole direction of their careers to find a match in an increasingly limited job market. A college degree is no more a guarantee of a quick hire and a good paying position and underemployment and unemployment is a serious concern for this age group.
