Canadian Rockies's Most Beautiful Leisure Drive For Explorers
Traveling the Trans-Canada Highway just outside of Banff is the Bow Valley Parkway which is the first highway that was built from Banff to Lake Louise in the 1920s. This first highway is a scenic drive in the Canadian Rockies. If you're visiting Banff National Park, it is an exceptional drive for the traveler.
Post 1950, when the Trans-Canada Highway was completed, this first street became a less-used street and was known as the 1A until 1986 when an upgrade changed the road into the Bow Valley Parkway. Because the Bow Valley rises and twists, it gives visitors an improved view of the majestic peaks of the mountains and gorgeous green valley.
The Canadian Rockies has a number of well-known drives and this is one of the must-drive roads. It's a well-marked parkway with parking pull overs, less traffic, and is fabulous for wildlife watching. Nearly all of Banff National Park's big game wildlife has been visible at, one point or another, from the observation areas and from driving along this road.
There are interpretive displays, places to rest, trails, waterfalls, campgrounds, meadows, a youth hostel, cabins, a mining town, and, not to mention the obvious, but also the impressive river, along the road. For those who like to get into the wilderness, there are a lot trails that lead to exceptional natural sites, such as waterfalls and lakes. Campers will find several backwoods-surrounded campgrounds and individuals looking for more comforts will be happy to hear that there are cabins and chalets at several points along the road.
The Bow Valley Parkway is a gorgeous scenic drive even if visitors only drive and stop at a few viewpoints. The scenes are outstanding. If vacation goers drive early or late in the day, especially in the late spring/early summer or in the early fall, the chances of seeing big game are excellent. Deer are likely seen grazing near the side of the parkway. Don't feel annoyed when approaching a traffic jam, this is a hint that there is big game ahead.
There are more than 30 things of interest on this parkway including one of Banff's most popular walks, Johnston Canyon, so be sure to plan at least a portion of the day to drive this parkway. A hike will add an extra three or four hours to the time-frame.
