Buying A Dual Processor System Board Is Not Going To Be Inexpensive

Who wants a dual processor motherboard, anyway? Why would anybody need that much computing power, outside of a school or business environment? You would be surprised! But you would guess right if you thought that it could be gamers who require all that raw speed. A dual processor mother board isn't going to suit your standard laptop computer, although there are mini and micro dual processor motherboards out there. Normally, if you are looking for a mother board with multiple processors, you are looking at a custom unit. The other consideration with 2 processors and a laptop is the heat produced by multiple Processor chips. More typically, a board of this type will be present in a desktop / workstation computer.

They are not exactly affordable! For a mid-priced dual processor motherboard, you are looking at around $450. And that is just the board; that is not including the CPUs themselves. Prices range from the upper $200's all the way up to nearly $1000. Contrast that with a typical single CPU motherboard at around $250 for a mid line mother board.

If you go the dual processor system board route, though, get as much system board as you can. Different ones are rated for different speeds and varying chip sets. As with pretty much everything computers, get more than you require right now. As several months down the road you might require it! And if you are spending all this money on a dual processor system board, you may as well do it right.

One more consideration -- when you purchase the Processor chips, ensure that they've the same voltage (very significant) and also the same speed. 2 processors with different speeds will slow each of them, as they try to juggle the processor load. Should you buy a dual processor system board? If you are looking for fast speed for games, but are not a power user or power gamer, then a system board with a single multicore processor would do fine. If you're building your own computer and want blazing speed and the ability to run lots of programs at once, then you would do well to look at a dual processor mother board.
